Catherine House by Elisabeth Thomas
4.0

Thank you to Custom House and Harper Collins for the ARC!

I'm finding it hard to put in to words my thoughts about this book. I really enjoyed it, but it's hard to say much beyond that.

I feel like the plot was minimal, and that most of the book is just made up of Ines' thoughts and observations of other people around her. But that is definitely not a bad thing. We see Catherine House through Ines' eyes, which means we don't get a clear picture of what's going on. We find things out as Ines does, and never know anything more than she does.

Catherine House is a creepy book. It is a superb example of dark academia (something that, I think, isn't often done very well). It's weird, and makes you feel slightly off, which I imagine the real Catherine House in the book does as well.

I think the highest praise that I can give this book is that I would love to see into the mind of the author and know how she came up with this delightfully disturbing book.

Note: I've seen this described as a psychological thriller, which I think it is decidedly not. There is definitely a mystery going on, but thriller is not the right word. The mystery unfold very slowly, the narrator is often sidetracked by her various relationships and worries about her studies, and so much of the meat of this book is spent on describing the lush, gothic setting. So if you are a fan of psychological thrillers normally, don't go into this story expecting what you usually get out of those kinds of books.
