Stories from Jonestown
by Leigh Fondakowski
This is definitely one of my favorite cult survivor stories I've read so far. The book is full of information and interviews gathered by the author when she was researching with a team to write a play about the Jonestown tragedy which would humanize the followers and tell the survivor's stories. I really appreciated learning more about the Peoples Temple history and the event that left 900+ people dead in the jungles of Guyana in the late 70s from the point of view of those who were there and left behind. Having been born over a decade after it happened, I remember learning about Jonestown for the first time when I wondered what the "drinking the Kool-Aid" phrase meant. I was probably a teen or early adult and I have made a conscious effort not to use that phrase ever since. Hearing one of the survivors address having to hear people say that without even really knowing what it means or that it referred to a real thing where they lost friends and family was especially powerful. There is no doubt that in the end Jim Jones was a messed up, drugged up power hungry liar who indoctrinated and abused people, but there is certainly more to it than him so I am glad the others involved got to share their stories.
