Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia
Genre: Contemporary YA
My rating: 4/5 stars
Short Summary (and it's a sucky summary, I know): Eliza Mirk, a teenage webcomic creator, thrives on autonomy, but when she meets a fan of her webcomic who writes fanfiction, her life changes.
>> TRIGGER WARNINGS: Anxiety, panic attacks, depression, death of a parent<<

My thoughts:

Plot: 4/5 stars
It's been said that this book has no plot, but it actually does. It's a very quiet plot, but it is a plot with excellent plot structure. However, I was very underwhelmed. I was just expecting more than I got, it's not the book's fault.

Characters: 4/5 stars
I love Eliza so much, but Wallace's behavior towards the end was inexcusable and I don't think he ever apologized to Eliza, but Eliza forgave him way too easily anyway.

Writing: 5/5 stars
MY GOD THE WRITING IS AMAZING!!

Other: 2/5 stars
(Note: I'm white, so my opinion here might mean nothing.)
I'm sure this wasn't intentional, but some parts of the book seemed mildly racist to me. For example, most of the characters' skin color is not specified, but then "she was a black woman. . . " Why not point out who's white too then, or not point out people's skin color at all? Also, I don't like how it was implied that Lucy's hair was nicer when she ruined it by getting it straightened to look like a white woman's hair, instead of having it in "a million little braids".

Do I recommend it? Yes.
