The Box in the Woods
by Maureen Johnson
The Box in the Woods is the 4th book in the Truly Devious series. In this book, Stevie is hired by Camp Wonder Falls to solve a case from 1978 where 4 camp counselors were murdered. Stevie agrees as long as she can bring her friends from Ellingham Academy.
Although part of the Truly Devious series, this book was a standalone mystery set in a different location. We still had Stevie Bell as our main character, and I loved that Janelle, Nate, and David were all in this story as well. The camp setting was perfect for this story, and I love that it made me think of slasher movies like Friday the 13th and Sleepaway Camp.
The book is told from dual timelines - the 1978 murders and present day. I enjoyed both the past and present storylines which doesn’t always happy so the author did a great job with that.
Although some of the book was predictable, I didn’t see the end coming. I have enjoyed all 4 books with these characters and hope we’ll get to see more of them!
I listened to all four books on audio, and I really enjoy the narrator, Kate Rudd. She does a great job of changing her tone and inflection so that it’s different with the past and present timelines.
