This book is set in California but also set in New Orleans at different points of the story as well. This book follows the grooming of a new vampire huntress and her guardians to protect people from vampires. However, there is something specifically special about this new vampire huntress. She has to learn how to stand on her own two feet because one day her guardians may not be there to save her.

I am waiting and still sitting with what I just read. I wanted to wait but decided to write a review right away. This book... to say it is the first in the series. WOW! It has left a mark on me for sure. I thought that I left my vampire-ish reading days behind me in 2010. However, because of this book, it will be making a strong comeback in 2021. I must admit that I was apprehensive in reading this book because I've just been eye-rolling anything vampire-related. This book ties in astrology, planet alignment, hints of root magic, sear magic, and destiny all into one. Each character role is so important to the MC and the overall plot that I can distinctively tell the characters apart. Which is not something I am used to seeing in vampire tropes. Being able to tell the characters apart helps me a lot because I tend to forget names.

The MC is such a badass and determined to protect those that she cares about and those that she won't admit that means something to her. Her guardians guard her with such hellbent desire that it gives a new meaning to what it means to have a "chosen family." Her family is ride or die in the most beautiful ways. Her character development makes you want to want more of her. Her origin story alone lets you know that she is a BIG GOT DAMN DEAL.

I wanted her to live her best life and enjoy all of the things that were robbed from her. I too felt rebellious for her as she did. On the other hand, I feared for her sear and the responsibility that she had to face. To be sear at this dangerous time and facing all of the evil battles that were ahead of them [the guardians] was a strength that I don't think I could have bear if I was the sear.

There was a scene in this book when one of the characters went to the under, underworld and it was so beautifully written that it was as if I was watching a movie before my very own eyes. As the story progressed things started to tie to the beginning of the story. I love it when we go back to the beginning and new clues reveal themselves. The last sentence was most definitely a cliffhanger and now I am here looking for book two. Fantastic. I will be back to this review with either more to say or to rate the book overall. I am just going to sit on the rating for a few more days.

Update: the steamy parts... wow!

WARNING: there are hints of Beastiality in this book.
