Cibola Burn
by James S. A. Corey
2024 reread:
I still really enjoyed the colonists' challenges on an alien planet—most notably, the ecological and psychological problems between the factions. Strangely, Bobby didn't have more of a role; despite having a chapter early on, she didn't appear again. This book is a great launching pad for the second era of the series, though, introducing new ramifications of the start of colonization and the choices made on the planet by Holden and the team.
Original:
Liked this one quite a bit more than the last one. It’s similarly somewhat slower, but I found this much more interesting, and the new characters are more compelling to spend time with. I like how Holden's character arc is developed, and the challenges of the alien planet make for exciting reading. More psychology, more science. I love that the characters' obstacles are usually pretty inventive and don’t just resort to gunfights. It's probably my favorite thing about the books, and it also remains valid for this one.
