James by Percival Everett

For a non-Mark-Twain fan this book lassoed me and wrangled my heart and mind onto an adventurous Mississippi adventure. I am a huge proponent of story retellings when they are conducted with respect, intention, and care -- and Everett's prowess as an author deftly followed through on these promises and so so much more. A read sure to illicit the range of human emotions as you are pulled through a new form of coming of age.

Perfect for discussion with the best of book club friends over Anti-Diabetic Mudpie, catfish, and soji because you didn't finish the book before planning dessert
