The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue
by V.E. Schwab
A young woman, a desperate bargain with a dark god and a life played out across centuries, cursed to be forgotten by all.
Addie may be virtually invisible, cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets, but she is extraordinary. She lives her life to the fullest, despite the odds stacked against her as a result of her bargain with a dark god.
This story was one that hit me unexpectedly and just stole me away. I was swept up in Addie’s life over the 300+ years - her struggles, her growth and her yearning for love and to simply be remembered. How do we know we’ve left our mark on this world if we are destined to be forgotten? One thing I’m sure of is that V.E. Schwab has definitely left a mark on my heart with this book!
I was awed by Addie’s cunning and her persistence to make her mark on this world, to leave proof behind that she was here and that she mattered.
This book is so many things - part love story, part magical realism, part survival story. It’s difficult not to be swept away, especially by the 2nd half with Henry. I loved how they fit together, each providing a missing piece of their puzzle.
I enjoy magical realism and fantasy and it was done beautifully here. I even found myself feeling for Luc, the dark god. As someone who has wished myself invisible a time or two in my life, I’m going to thank my 7 lucky stars that I have people in my life who will surely remember me once I’m gone.
