ausfangirlreads 's review for:
The Friar's Lantern
by Greg Hickey
I received a free e-copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Growing up I loved the choose your own adventure genre, as many people my age growing up did.
I recently rediscovered the genre in the form of a Romeo and Juliet choose your own adventure and I absolutely adored it. So, when I was offered a free copy of The Friar’s Lantern, a new adult Choose your own adventure, I quickly said yes and was excited to give this book a go.
As much as I was looking forward to this book I must stay I found it lacking in a few areas.
I didn’t feel like I was given enough opportunities to choose my own path, but because of how short the main story was I understand the fact that there couldn’t be too many options.
That being said because of how stupid I am I did manage to kill my character at the first choice, which I am weirdly proud of, don’t ask me why but I am proud of it.
I found the ideas of the story enjoyable, but I found the author was much too descriptive for my liking, like I understand that you are trying to get into the brain of the reading the look of the building we are about to enter, but it just felt like too much. I found myself skimming over the description just to keep the story going and even then I found my reading progress to falter and I did struggle to find the motivation to finish this story.
Rating: 2/5 stars – It was okay
Like I said the stories plot was interesting with a good dose of quirky story telling mixed into the serious parts of the plot, but I think if the story was written in another way with less descriptions I would of liked it better.
I’m never one to tell people not to read a book, even though I didn’t enjoy this book, It might be perfect for you, so, If the plot interests you, give it a go!
