Home Before Dark

This did not do it for me at ALL. The writing is just, awful.
1. It wasn't scary. Not even suspenseful. I went in expecting Amityville Horror vibes and got *none* of that.
2. The writing was distracting. Tossing in "verisimilitude" for a character that otherwise has very standard vocabulary takes you RIGHT out of the book. I've read, heavily, for 30 years now and that's the first time I have ever seen that word, it doesn't belong in the head of that character.
3. He doesn't seem to understand writing women at all, which I still find surprising since he writes from women's perspectives so often. If you don't understand "mansplaining" (he doesn't) don't use it. Also? Unless a 16 year old is wearing her hair REAL weird, she really doesn't need to have her hair up to see her necklace. Also? Women don't think about men the way she thought about Dane.
4. Various issues with it being set in Vermont but the author clearly hasn't been here. Ever.
5. For a book about Maggie, she sure was missing an awful lot. Where the hell was the kid while they were "christening" every room in the house? Does the author have kids? 5 year olds don't just wander off and play for hours so you can get your freak on...
In all, very disappointing. It's like reading a very poorly written RL Stine novel, except you are reading it as an adult so it's not even a little scary.
