All Boys Aren't Blue by George M. Johnson
4.0

I have had this on my audiobook TBR for a while, but decided to pick it up during banned books week this year. This is a "YA" memoir which I didn't really understand at first, but I think this book would be great for a younger person, 17-21 ish? CW: detailed depictions of sex & molestation, so I would be hesitant about how young I would recommend this for.

What I really enjoyed about this book, was seeing depictions of a young queer person growing up with a generally accepting family. It really shines a light on how microaggressions & systematic heteronormativity can affect a young person and their decision to come out/ stay in the closet. The author does a good job pointing out when others harmed him, and when he was in the wrong and trying to take accountability for that.

My one negative: Maybe because it is YA, but the stories felt overexplained. The author told his stories well, but also always finished them by telling the audient what they meant and the lesson from that story. I think the audience could have reflected for ourselves and benefited from that.
