Rebel Seoul
by Axie Oh
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 4 stars
Rebel Seoul is a dystopian story set in a future Korea, which is torn in two after a war. Lee Jaewon is a student at the war academy, being prepped for becoming someone to help the nation as a soldier.
I enjoy dystopian world and how different and broad it can be, it is truly different from the world as we know it and I love the authors take on Seoul in this book! It really made me feel like this book was set in the future. I am not a huge fan of robot war machines, and luckily, they weren’t as present as could’ve been. All the information is given slowly, woven through Jaewon’s all day life. It is a very pleasant way to learn more about the world and everything around it.
The use of Korean words, that were easy to learn and understand, really added more flavour and tone to the story and the world. It wasn’t overused or irritating, it was the exact opposite!
I really liked all the characters in this story! All were very engaging, Jaewon especially. His background was truly heartbreaking and it made me care so much for him. The interaction between him and the other characters and how they developed were also really interesting as they all played a different role in his story. It made them all very integral to his world.
The forbidden romance bit was interesting, albeit a bit predictable. Even though it was predictable it was sweet to read about. I did wish there were a few more scenes of Tera and Jaewon together. It felt as if a lot happened off the pages.
Overall, it was a really good dystopian story with interesting characters, a gripping plot and an ending that left me wanting more.
