The Middlesteins
by Jami Attenberg
--Recommended by Susie and Jo
Jo's review: "The Middlesteins'' artfully demonstrates what happens to a family when it has to deal with a loved one's addictions. Author Jami Attenberg makes you feel the frustration, anger and agony experienced by the family when the addicted person isn't willing to change.
Edie Middlestein is addicted to food, which can be just as deadly as alcohol, heroin, cigarettes or cocaine. Although the topic is serious, Attenberg brings lightness to the writing with subtle humor and sweetness. Attenberg, who grew up in Buffalo Grove, Illinois, sets her plot in her old neighborhood, which is fun for people who are familiar with the area.
