Michigan vs. the Boys
by Carrie S. Allen
’ve said this before and I’ll say it again...I rarely read YA novels anymore. But if I do, they have to be hard-hitting contemporaries OR a book by Sarah Dessen. Enter Michigan vs. The Boys by Carrie
This book was recommended by @booksandlala , my favourite Booktuber. It follows Michigan, a teenager who makes the local boys hockey team after her girls team gets cut due to lack of funding at her high school. She experiences all kinds of foul treatment from the boys on the team. It doesn’t seem to matter that she’s one of their best players. The more she shines on the team, the worse it gets for her.
This book was excellent. It was hard-hitting and emotional. I can’t imagine having to deal with this type of discrimination in order to play a sport that you love. I know this book is based on truths in the world of women’s sports and I hope that one day this type of behaviour or story won’t exist for a woman athlete.
