These Shallow Graves
by Jennifer Donnelly
4.5/5 stars!
I love a good mystery and I love a good historical fiction so I’m always excited when the genres are combined in a book!
This one takes place in 1890 and I kept having to remind myself how different the world was back then. Now, I don’t know tons about life back then but I thought this book did a decent job representing what it was like for women during that time. They were just starting to be seen as real people who are worth more than the children they produce. The mystery was woven together quite nicely as well. I was able to figure out most of the ending but I still thoroughly enjoyed it! Jo was a decent character. She is what you would expect from the rich and snooty world she was raised in: oblivious and naive. But she was smart and resourceful too and it made up for what she was lacking.
Overall I really enjoyed this book and I look forward to reading more of Donnelly’s books in the future!
