Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld
5.0

Sally Milz is a comedy writer for the late night sketch show "The Night Owls" who is more interested in career success and casual flings than finding "the one." When she meets guest host and musician Noah Brewster, she begins to question everything she thought she knew about love and relationships.

One of the things that made this book so much fun is its setting: a live comedy show, TNO, which is clearly modeled after the iconic sketch show "Saturday Night Live." Many of the novel's funniest scenes take place during the writing and rehearsal process for the weekly sketches and I highly enjoyed that. Sittenfeld does an excellent job of capturing the frenetic energy of a live comedy show, as well as the absurdity and hilarity of some of the sketches themselves.

Something else I loved about this book was how it skewered the tired, sexist tropes of romantic comedies while still delivering a swoon-worthy love story. Sally is a refreshingly complex female character, and her relationship with Noah feels real and honest.

Resonating with me as well is the book's commentary on modern gender relations. Sittenfeld's observations about the way society views men and women are spot-on, and she's not afraid to point out the double standards and absurdities of it all. The Danny Horst Rule was hilarious, but it was also something to think about!

Overall, "Romantic Comedy" checked all the boxes for me and was the perfect romcom. I highly recommend, especially to those who loved One To Watch and Spoiler Alert - this will hit the spot!
