What an absolutely wonderful, masterfully told story! It really gives me folklore-type feelings.

Favorite quote:
"Abitha could see that these people believed, truly believed, that they were doing God’s work here this day. And there was something about these people that horrified Abitha even worse than those whose faces were lined with cruelty. As at least cruelty was a thing that could be pointed out, confronted. But this belief, this absolute conviction that this evil they were doing was good, was God’s work—how, she wondered, how could such a dark conviction ever be overcome?"

I just loved everything about this book. The characters, both main and minor, whether you love them or hate them, all have interesting backstories and character developments. I grew to love so many unexpected characters because of this. I also enjoyed that the twist of
the true villain being the "church/rigid views" instead of the supposed "devil." I also thought it was really well done that this twist wasn't a sudden reveal, but a gradual build-up/reveal that the reader pieces together alongside the character/story development.

All in all, I am a sucker for historical fiction/fantasy, especially when it has to do with religion (I love studying religions), so this hit a lot of personal areas of interest for me.

The cherry on top: Brom's art is just absolutely incredible. Love, love, love!
