Rubbernecker
by Belinda Bauer
Rubbernecker is one of the best books I have read this year. It is an extremely engaging and uniquely unconventional crime novel where the main protagonist, Patrick Forte, is an 18 yo with Asperger’s. Patrick has been fascinated with death since he was 8 and his father was killed by a hit-and-run driver while they were crossing the street together. Patrick is truthful to a fault, logical and obsessive so when he thinks the cause of death for the cadaver in his anatomy class is incorrect he is determined to find correct answer and will not let it rest. Through his dogged, witty and sometime dangerous hunt for the truth we are given a fascinating look not only at life with Asperger’s but also at the inside of a neurological center for coma patients. Belinda Bauer did an amazing job showing how Patrick slowly learned to interact with people and how he struggled to understand what people were feeling and at the same time keep the crime story interesting and believable.
