Blonde Hair, Blue Eyes
by Karin Slaughter
This novel is the prequel to Pretty Girls. I have a history of looking at things in metaphors versus face value. While reading this short novel, I thought the author was trying to convey that women being abused is not their fault. It is the fault of the people who prey on them. Being drunk, or having multiple sex partners doesn’t mean “she deserves.” Those narratives are hurtful to victims and may be the reason why over 80% of sexual assault doesn’t get reported due to victim blaming. This short story revealed that being assaulted is serious and shouldn’t be taken lightly. Rest in Peace Julia! (I’m aware that Julia is a character).
This book also made me think of #metoo and caused me to ask myself when will or if my number come up, will I be #20948474749 and counting?
