Hotel Magnifique by Emily J. Taylor
1.0

The opportunity of a lifetime to work at a magical hotel. Two girls wanting nothing more than to make their dreams come true and get out of their life of poverty interview for the hotel... but underneath all the magic is something much more sinister. Jani has dreamed about getting out of her job at the tannery and finally getting to go home to her village. She was forced to grow up early and get a job after the death of her mother and she had to take care of her younger sister Zosa. Zosa is a wonderful singer and dreams about making a career as a singer so when the Hotel Magnifique comes to town, this is the opportunity they’ve both been waiting for. The hotel is known for it’s magical enchantments, its ability to travel and appear in various destinations, and the magical workers there. When Jani and Zosa interview for the job Jani is instantly turned away but Zosa gets the job... and that means Jani cannot come with her as the contract only allows employees to live in the hotel. Jani is determined to stay with her sister at any cost, so when the doorman comes to pick up Zosa, Jani strikes a bargain to get herself a job there. Said doorman is the handsome but vexing and magical man named Bel. Bel has warned her to run and get as far away as possible but Jani is determined to get the job so when he signs a contract with her for her to become an employee, something about her contract is different. Upon arrival at the hotel Jani begins to realize that things are not as magical as they seem and that the workers are acting strange... and that there are much darker consequences for breaking the rules of the hotel. Soon Jani will have to navigate this system if she wants to escape with her sister and to free the other employees that have been trapped in the hotel. With the help of Bel, Jani will have to face the cruelty and powers of the hotel management as well as solve the mystery of what the contracts actually entail and how the control of the employees functions. If she is unable to do so everything she holds dear will vanish including her memories and the relationship she has started to build. Unfortunately this story did not work for me, initially I was intrigued by the premise of the book because magical hotel? high stakes? mystery? sing me up! However where this book lost me was the characters, Jani felt flat and was a bit irritating, and the so called relationship she had with her sister that she constantly said she was close to barely felt there. Also the romance was not there for me, I just didn’t see the chemistry between the two. Overall the story just didn’t meet the expectations I had and I just wasn’t that interested in the characters or connect to them. While this one didn’t work for me I definitely think it would be a great read for fans of Caraval and The Night Circus.
