Dress Coded
by Carrie Firestone
This actually more of a middle-grade novel, or really it's just perfect for those middle-school years. It's also very inspiring. I want to fight all the dress codes now. Are dress codes still a thing in pandemic remote schooling? (I know there's some weird thing about having to wear shoes, which I don't understand at all. How do shoes help you learn?)
Molly is horrified when her friend is caught in a dress code violation and the entire class loses out on a field trip. It seems like, at her school, if you have a certain type of body, it's impossible not to get dress coded. One time Molly and her friend wear the same exact outfit, and her friend is dress coded and she is not. Molly starts a podcast, and eventually more protests, about this unfairness. Many students join in, including high school students who remember the awful way they felt, and that it isn't enforced at the high school. Can they get rid of the dress code?
I didn't think much about dress codes in school, other than the fact that I almost never wore shorts because it was hard to find shorts long enough to go past my fingertips. I was lucky to find capris in my size. When I heard about all the students who failed tests and such because they were late to class, or missed class because of a slight clothing violation, it made me so angry. I'm sure there are people in my class who have horrible memories of dress codes. I think it's about time that dress codes that mostly affect women's bodies were a thing of the past.
