There are very few books, or even people, that I’ve found that have spoken into my life quite like Sarah Bessey’s writing can. My story is one riddled with doubt and questions but also joy and hope. It doesn’t make sense, and most churches still don’t think they can all go together. As someone married to a pastor and deconstructing at the same time, I needed this more than anything else. Religion has become a chore and steps to walk through, but this book reminded me that I’m not alone in this. I’m not a terrible Christian because of what I’ve been working through. This is a normal reaction to living in a broken world with churches that are trying to imitate Christ, but still fall short because we’re all human.

I am not healed yet, but Sarah Bessey’s writing showed me why I should keep showing up and fighting through the tough moments and questions instead of throwing in the towel.

This book is not for everyone, because we all have such different walks of faith. If you, like me, have found yourself wandering in the wilderness for any length of time, this book is a reminder that the One Who Sees saw Hagar in the desert and sees you, too.
