All in all, a quick and delightful read, but not without it's flaws. That being said, spoilers ahead.
Do you like ghosts? Intrigue? The film "Clue" but you wish it had more ghosts? The Victorian mourning aesthetic?
Ah! Of course you do!
I must say, I was enjoying the whole first... 90% of this book. For a short story this pacing is fantastic and interesting and I wanted to keep reading! I loved our love interest and the twist that the main character was the one who could actually reach spirits was interesting.
All that being said, the buildup for ghosts was good, great even! I liked it and enjoyed it! I normally don't like a story that cops out on supernatural elements for the explanation, but this book introduced ghosts and death naturally with the loss of Mc's husband and her beginning her mourning period.
And then... That last bit.
Vampires.
Introduced in the last like ... Few pages with no prior foreshadowing and introduction.
I am one for a good twist, but a good twist needs to have some kind of... Thrill. This twist just made me scratch my head and say, "Ah... Okay."
The MC was pretty realistic, coping with loss and trying to move on with life and all that, I loved her. The author writes good character.
Would i read the rest of the series? Sure, but only if there aren't any more "we-have-7-pages-left" twists. 3.5 stars!
