ellemaddy 's review for:
I didn't expect to be able to finish my reading goal this year, heck, didn't even expect to read any books at all with everything else that's been happening. So to be able to finish reading 39 books in a year compared to the previous ones where I only read about 3-5 books a year feels like a small victory and it definitely reignited my excitement towards reading again.
Here's a small reviews of one of the best, the averages, and the bad (a very subjective list):
THE BEST
1. Mo Dao Zu Shi by mxtx
Yes, like everyone else, early this year I got into the mdzs train and watched the untamed too. I like the book better. Truly one of my favorite reads this year.
2. Tian Guan Ci Fu by mxtx
Again, EPIC. Blew my mind, reconstructed it, and then blew it again to a thousand pieces. Amazing 5/5, somehow even better than MDZS if I do say so myself.
3. The Hunger Games trilogy (a reread, technically.) by Suzanne Collins
Since THG's audiobooks are available on spotify, I decided to give it a listen and I was amazed by the quality. Frankly I could listen to Tatiana Maslany talk about literally anything for hours on end without getting bored. Her voice is so animated, I love it. Aside from all that, the books are still good even though it's been a while since I've read it.
4. The Shining by Stephen King
Yes, another reread. Look, listen, I just wanted to read some of my favorite books in this shitty ass year, okay, sue me.
5. Call Me by Your Name by Andre Aciman
Listened to the audiobook and it rocked my world. This book is good (I'm ignoring all the ??? questionable parts) and paired with Armie Hammer narrating the story? Absolutely amazing. Top notch quality.
6. My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell
I know I rated this 3 stars, but I can't call this book average or bad either, like it's impressive for it to be a debut novel but it also hurts a lot to read.
7. Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid
I had a blast reading this book, which was unexpected because I didn't read the summary and judged the book solely by its cover (which I love) so I had a pretty high expectation of it. Suffice to say, I wasn't disappointed.
THE AVERAGE
1. The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System by mxtx
The least impressive out of all mxtx's books but still good regardless. I love the author's approach to humor in this book (compared to tgcf and mdzs like those shit are bleak as fuck). This book was meta, in a funny way. #binggebigdick
Yup I just said that.
2. 2HA by Meatbun doesn't eat meat
Technically DNF because I couldn't get past a certain chapter DUE TO LACK OF ENGLISH TRANSLATION big sighs. Putting this book on the average tab until further notice, but I feel like I'm going to love it. This one's even more bleak than mxtx's writing.
3. A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara
Once upon a time I used to rave and recommend this book to literally every mankind I'd ever met and remembering all that now I'm disgusted with myself. It's like recommending MDV to unsuspecting people without telling them about all of the content warnings, it's just wrong. I still love HY's writing style, but this one was painful to get through the third time around (Yeah I read it more than once, so what of it). I couldn't rate this one either, just because.
4. Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami
Also another reread, I'm starting to see a pattern with all the books I read this year (haha). I used to love this, back when I just graduated from college and I loved loved it. I think this with most of Haruki Murakami's books require your mind to be quiet to be able to really enjoy it and my mind this year was the complete opposite of quiet, it was on fire and I needed to read some actions, something exciting, and this book doesn't cut it. It's still good, though, I just didn't enjoy it as much as I did when I was 18/19 years old.
5. Uprooted by Naomi Novik
Enjoyed this? Even though I have a hard time consuming YA Fantasy books in general. I don't have a lot to say about it, though.
6. The Glass Hotel by Emily St. John Mandel
One of the book that I was really looking forward to read, simply because it's Emily St. John motherfuckin Mandel, yall. She wrote one of my favorite book ever, Station Eleven, so I was really looking forward to read this. Some of my expectations were met, some were not, overall just an average bordering on quite a good read. Wasn't that disappointed.
7. My Sister the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite
A funny, short book. I loved it, I had a blast reading this. I thought the title was exaggerating but apparently not *laugh crying emoji*. Hashtag men are trash.
8. Heartstopper by Alice Oseman
The type of story that could truly never go wrong. Heartstopper? more like heartwarming, lovely, cute, I love them with my entire life? But, even though I enjoyed this immensely and I squealed about a hundred times while reading this, the story itself is not anything new or groundbreaking, hence why: average.
9. The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
LISTEN, I know that this is a generally loved book, but the theme itself is disturbing to say the least, this is just personal preference okay, I just didn't enjoy it but I can't say that it's bad because it's not. I also watched the show and it gave me nightmares, so.
10. The Cheerleaders by Kara Thomas
Don't have a lot to say about this one. It was OK.
11. The Guest List by Lucy Foley
I absolutely love the atmosphere and the setting that the author's created in this book. The creepiness was REAL. The ending was too quick and too convenient for my liking, but it was a good read, regardless.
12. Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
Amazing, I've never quite read a book that talks about mushroom in a creepy way (I'm kidding, mushrooms are always creepy. Sometimes they're cute, but mostly creepy.), but whatever the fuck is happening in this book is such a new concept to me, I've never heard about any of this stuff ever, so it was refreshing.
13. Thinner by Stephen King
Fun, entertaining, just like literally every Stephen King's books ever.
14. Genuine Fraud by E. Lockhart
A complete Ripley rip-off girl version no one asked for yet here we are. A lot of people hated it, I had mix feelings about it but I sure did enjoyed reading this book.
THE BAD
1. Reputation by Sara Shepard
I read the entirety of PLL series so I had no high expectation going into this whatsoever. I knew this was gonna be trashy and filled to the brim with brand names, my expectation was met and it was still bad.
2. Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer
How is it possible that Stephenie Meyer wrote 4 books and they're all bad and they became worldwide bestselling books and had movie adaptations starring A-list celebrities as well? Like have we, collectively as human beings, lost our goddamn minds? No matter how you look into these, they're all around bad, okay? God, I can't. And the fact that I've read these instalments more than once? It's like everytime I reread it I'm just trying to check whether it's still bad or not and always, each time, I'm like "YUP. Still garbage."
3. One To Watch by Kate Stayman-London
Didn't enjoy just because personally I do not care about dating reality shows or reality shows in general.
And that's it folks! So happy to wrap up 2020 and just be done with it altogether!
