Soundless
by Richelle Mead
A Richelle Mead book not about vampires, I was skeptical. But this was actually really really good and different!
Nothing like this has been done before in YA. Characters who are all Chinese and who communicate with sign language. I'm no Chinese folklore expert so I don't know where exactly it's derived from but it was so cool. If you're not up for suspending some disbelief than your not going to enjoy this as much. A couple things happen with no explanation but that is the consequence of mythology. It makes for a compelling story though.
I absolutely loved the characters in the book from Fei to Zhang Jing and to Li Wei. They were all super different and developed. The relationships between Fei and her sister and Fei and Li Wei are vital in this novel.
I'm also impressed with the fact that this is a standalone fantasy which is hard to pull off. Richelle Mead did it beautifully.
