El Deafo
by Cece Bell
As someone with hearing loss, I definitely wants to read this book. As a kid we were told that hearing aids wouldn't help enough, but now I'm wondering if maybe a device like Cece has got school would have been helpful. Don't get me wrong, as a kid I was so grateful that I didn't have something external to let people know something was wrong with me - because I definitely thought something was wrong with me.
As an adult, I'm apparently a good candidate for a cochlear implant, but the idea is terrifying. I'm 37 and don't want to suddenly start heading all the things. It seems like a migraine waiting to happen.
This was a fascinating book for me to read. I definitely thought I was getting more of a childhood fantasy book regarding a superhero called El Deafo rather than an autobiographical sorry, but I loved every bit of it!
