The Rest of Us Just Live Here
by Patrick Ness
I just read this thing in one sitting and /man/. I didn’t know much going into this book—only that it was about the ones that weren’t chosen, and I loved that idea. This book ... I think it deserves a few bullet lists.
This book was about
• little things that matter
• normal life is not always normal
• big problems don’t have to involve the end of the world
This book had
• cute friends and boyfriends and girlfriends and platonic friends and just all the great, lovely friends you make your family
• important reminders with mental health issues—these moments were so powerful and so, so important
• a quirky, relatable, flawed, and amazing main character
• if Jared wasn’t a god, I would still claim his god status right here
• lots of other good things (including amazing quotes) that you must read to find for yourself
I love the questions that stay unanswered in this book. I love that it stayed about the “other” ones, and even though they were affected by the big stuff, that wasn’t what the story was about. The story was about love and friendship and being there for others, and those are the best stories in the world, and the ones we all need more of.
