Catherine House by Elisabeth Thomas

This is a gothic for sure, but everything else it just made an attempt at. It tried to be dark academia, it tried to be mysterious, it tried to provoke thought, and failed at all of it.

Ines was boring and lacked any defining characteristics, much like the school itself. Every other paragraph was about how drunk and/or hungover she and her friends were. There were scenes in her second year at the house where she was still getting lost. Sorry, what? I went to a massive campus and within a week I knew where every building was. That doesn't make sense even for someone who is drunk all of the time.

The romance with Theo felt forced, and at the end when Victoria said it was Theo's idea to kill Ines and turn her into an experiment I genuinely wasn't sure if that was true because I never actually got to know any of the characters.

It would have at least been interesting if Ines had become an experiment, or talked to Baby (or her body, whatever) or even really wanted anything. Instead she just . . . escapes. And that's it. Yawn, yawn, yawn.
