Juliet Takes a Breath by Gabby Rivera
5.0

Upon finishing this book, I turned to my sister and went on a 45-minute tangent about everything from sexism to racism and prejudice and more. I had so many thoughts--but even more, this book gave me so many /questions/. Not in a bad or overwhelming way, but in an eye opening way that made me realize it was time to stop letting myself be okay with not having any answers. This book was the final push for me to delve into the world of nonfiction and start educating myself about the real issues that exist in our world today--specifically the United States.

I am so grateful that this book exists, and that it is for young adults. It has some language, which might give more conservative parents pause in handing it off to their children, but I think this is a really important read for high schoolers. I already want to reread it. And buy my own copy to take notes.

Take your time with this one. Be open minded. Be curious. Notice what you think and how you feel, and let that guide you as you reflect on your own conceptions and biases. Don't be afraid to ask yourself the hard questions, or put in the work to get answers to them.
