Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker
4.0

This book arrived in my life on a wave of serendipity: I was listening to the Reading Glasses podcast as I checked in books at my library job, and just as Mallory mentioned this title, I reached into the bookdrop and found a copy sitting right there. Seemed appropriate for a book about magic.

Mooncakes is a cinnamon roll of a book, featuring a wholesome queer romance between Nova, a young witch, and her childhood friend Tam, a nonbinary werewolf who has recently returned to town after moving away. With help from Nova's lesbian grandmas, some spirits, and one of Nova's friends, they confront the dark forces lurking in the local forest and uncover a plot that involves Tam's past.

Lately I've had trouble focusing on reading, and I really needed a quick, uplifting, and queer book like this one. Great not only for exhausted thirtysomething urban fantasy fans like myself, but also for tweens and teens, and for anyone who loved Molly Ostertag's graphic novel The Witch Boy.
