Considering how long this book is, there really isn't much that happens with the plot or characters. Dual timelines and multi-POVs are usually my jam, but I found myself only interested in one POV (Alex) out of the five we are given and unbelievably uninterested in the 'current day' perspective. I'll give it to Danforth, the writing itself was gorgeous - and the audiobook narrator had a beautiful and eerie way of telling the story through tone switches, creepy singing bits, and crackling voices where applicable. Unfortunately, as a whole though, I was disappointed - there was so much potential, especially in the historical timeline with Libby and Alex and Addie - like seriously, I had no interest in Harper, Audrey, and Merritt (especially Merritt).
