A Soul to Keep
by Opal Reyne
"Okay, so what if I’m a pervert? A smile brightened her features. Who cares if I’m attracted to a monster? "
The Good
Arranged marriage-esque plots combined with monster romance will get me to read a book everytime! I loved both Reia and Orpheus. Their relationship developed at a good pace and I understand why they fell in love with each other. Reia was sharp and super sure of herself. She was sometimes a little dumb but I understood her need to feel free after growing up locked away from everything. Orpheus was super sweet and complex. He had a darkness to him that had real weight to it and was cool to see. Him having to battle with himself to literally not eat her while wanting her so badly. The lore and world building of this book was interesting. I liked that these demons and monsters were actually horrifying and dangerous. I loved nameless! He was such an innocent himbo and I liked his friendship with Reia.
The Bad
I didn't like how "the woman" was written about. Hearing about his past didn't make me dislike her or feel like she did anything wrong. She was basically kidnapped by him and couldn't leave and we're meant to see her as a bad person because she didn't fall in love with him. She didn't want to be there in the first place, he took her. She didn't want to die. I don't like how she was framed as a bad person for being resentful and leaving him. It also framed her technically not saying no as it being all her fault. Sorry she didn't tell her kidnapper know when she had no power over him. This plot-line felt icky to me and I didn't like it at all. She is a victim.
