I finished this book and really didn't know how I felt about it, so I had to start talking to other people who read it before I got my thoughts clearly in order. 

It took me a really long time to read this book, much longer than I would have liked. I do think that maybe if I didn't take so long to read it I would have enjoyed it MUCH more, but I don't know. I started on the train back to college and just could not pay attention to it and barely touched it for the first 2 or 3 weeks I was reading it. It definitely picked up around 1/3 of the way in. This seems to be the case with some of Jones' other work, as well. I think I read the first half of this book in about a month and a half, the third quarter of it in about a week, and the last quarter in a little more than a day. I really did feel like I was trudging through the first third of it, but it really did pick up speed in the last third.

There's a really fine line between "This is clearly a labour of love and a love letter to the movies this artist is inspired by/grew up watching" and "Look, we said that thing that happens in horror movies. We named a horror movie." This definitely toed the line. I can tell that Jones loves these movies and I don't think it's the amount of references that got annoying, but Jade's obsession with putting the people around her into slasher archetypes. But, honestly, I totally get it. She's a girl who uses these movies as escapism and clearly has an overactive imagination. Someone I asked mentioned that there's been speculation that Jade might be autistic and hearing that made everything make sense. I think you really have to understand how traumatized, neurodivergent, and potentially emotionally stunted minds work to get through this book without getting aggravated.
