This is an in-depth look at the complexities of bullying, from the perspective of a character who bullies someone else. Mallory, our narrator, is such a complex character. You wanted to love her and hate her at the same time. She was so desperate to be liked by the popular crowd that she went against her better judgement, a lot of the time. Middle school is such a hard time for that, and Keller portays it in such a realistic way.

The book itself switches between past and present, but it's easy to follow where the book is going. Not only are the characters well developed, but Keller treats the subject matter with such care. Highly recommend reading the author's note at the end, because she explains her reasoning for writing this story at the end, and it's almost just as heartbreaking.

Be warned this is an emotional read, but it is definitely worth it.
