Pet Sematary by Stephen King
4.0

See? I read a novel every once in awhile. 100 comics inbetween =P

Pet Sematary is probably one of the more famous works from Stephen King. I'm not going to pretend I've read everything from the guy, but the majority things I've read I enjoyed. I especially loved Salem's Lot and IT. So I was pretty excited to give this a go. With the 2019 movie coming in April, I guess I picked a good time to jump on the bandwagon! Hey-Ho, let's go!!!

Louis and his family move to a new town to try and start life again. Once getting set in, and becomes best friends with Judd, the awesome neighbor across the road (or rud), everything seems to come together. The majority of this book is actually focused on Death itself. And so Louis, as a doctor, experiences the different phases of death. However, it's when tragedy hits home that things take a very dark twist. What is Pet Sematary, and what dark secrets does it hold?

Good: The slow build up can be a good thing or a bad thing. Here, it's masterfully done. The mundane stories of the everyday life work to benefit to really learn and love these characters. From Louis approach to logic, to his wife Rachel love for her kids and husband, to Gage sweetness and learning to talk, to Ellie's fierce and mature look at life. They all work together to create something special but it's the icing on the top, Jud, the neighbor who is like a grandfather watching over everyone. They all build upon each other and create a family you learn to love.

The horror part works well as it follows the famous "tell don't show" and a lot of the deaths are even harder to digest because of the lack of details of their death, leaving your mind to wonder and create even more fucked up situations. The ending, last 50-60 pages, is chilling and also downright scary at moments.

Bad: There's a long stretch of grave robbing that honestly could have been shorter. I get what it was going for, and it could be thrilling to some, but I found it overly long and broke my interest for a week or two till I came back to the book. Luckily, this is basically the only negative I can think of.

Pet Sematary might not be as high as IT but I'd put it easily as high as Salem's Lot. A chilling story with some real great insight to death. It made me really think about it all. a 4 out of 5.
