An Echo of Things to Come by James Islington
4.0

When I reviewed The Shadow of What Was Lost, I commented on how it was unusual for epic fantasy on having a fast paced, action packed beginning. An Echo of Things to Come was the exact opposite - it started slow and didn't really pick up the pace until about a third of the way through the book. Once it finally gripped me though I flew through the pages.

It's occasionally a frustrating book to read. The several main characters spend most of the book apart and the narrative is split between them, and so it felt like there were regular cliffhangers where I would have to wait multiple chapters to find out what happened to a character. Sometimes by the time it returned to a character I would have almost forgotten what was happening to them. There are also frequent flashbacks, most of which are genuinely interesting but it adds to the sense that the narrative is just switching up all over the place.

There are really strong themes to this book - morality, ethics, belief, the fact that believing you are doing the right thing doesn't mean your actions aren't evil.

The ending of the novel packs a punch, and I'm fully intending to read book 3 as soon as I can get hold of it.
