If you are politically minded, have a good attention to detail, or know a lot about Julius Caesar and Cleopatra, this is probably the book for you. Unfortunately, I am none of those things.
I felt like I was missing something the entire time. I did enjoy the writing and the premise, which let me finish the book, but I struggled a lot with figuring out what was going on. Big events seemed to just happen off-page and the dialogue and characters’ motivations felt a bit vague and detached from these, so I wasn’t really convinced by anyone’s actions (if there even were any). I would have had to really analyze or know the history to figure out the significance of every conversation. Perhaps that’s someone’s cup of tea, but not mine.
