Birdie
by Tracey Lindberg
Wow. This book. I found the story initially fairly hard to follow, but it completely paid off my effort. I won't summarize too much and deprive you of the joy of discovery, but this novel follows the experience of Bernice, a Cree woman, as she shuts down from the world and goes on an extended journey through space and time, experiencing dreams and her own memories, and healing from hurts of her past. Cw here for sexual assault perpetrated by family members. Lindberg's writing is poetic and beautiful, and Bernice and her “madefamily” are unforgettable characters. This is going to be a book I'm thinking about and recommending for a long time!
“She is hungry for family. For the women she loves. For the sounds of her language. For the peace of no introduction, no backstory, no explanation.”
