Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker
2.5

Mooncakes is a YA contemporary fantasy graphic novel. It follows Nova a teen witch working in her grandmother's bookshop in her small-town. One day Nova finds her old childhood friend a werewolf named Tam fighting a demon in the woods. As Tam and Nova team up to unravel this mystery they slowly rekindle their friendship from childhood and it grows into something more.

While Mooncakes was generally inoffensive there was something lacking about it. The characters felt shallow and therefore the relationships at the backbone of the story were one-note and flat. Unfortunately, I felt this lack of depth in the art style as well. Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu's art felt stilted and stiff. Their characters especially felt lacking in emotion and the art lacked a dynamism that could have kept me engaged.

While nothing about Moonkackes angered me its overall meh storytelling makes it a graphic novel I can't see sticking with me for long. If you're looking for a YA contemporary fantasy small-town witch graphic novel with lesbian grandmas and trans side characters I'd recommend Snapdragon by Kat Leyh before Mooncakes. But I don't have any hard feelings toward the book.
