It's weird going into a book you know nothing about after having read nothing but sequels and tie-in books to franchises you already know. You have to wiggle into the world, not really fitting at first, but you get there eventually.
This book was interesting in the fact that I didn't know where it was going to go. There were familiar plot points, but they didn't exactly go the way they usually wood. Oh, he really appreciates the confident and smart nurse, perhaps they're going to fall in love..
Nope, the male main character hooks up with another magical gentleman and it is just lovely. I was really hoping it wouldn't be baiting or anything like that, it just took its time, but then randomly went full throttle towards the end.
While the book has a good sense of pacing throughout most of the story, the climax is in the last ten pages and really felt rushed. The plot did finish in a satisfying way, leaving just enough for a sequel, so I wasn't too bothered.
I really like this world, though the world-building could be a bit confusing at times. The book just gives you these small tidbits about the world here and there, so it's a learn as you go thing.
The ending gave me some real Fullmetal Alchemist vibes and that's all I'm going to say about that. Liked this books and will happily read the sequel.
