To be honest, it seemed like a pretty innocuous thriller really. I can see why it's a bestseller. It seems the sort of thing anyone could read to the end without too much effort and with a reasonable level of enjoyment, even if they threw it aside and forgot about it the moment they'd finished the last page.
Which is why some the the criticisms directed at it seemed a bit weird. Was the language really that bad? Was it really full of offensive descriptions and scandalous swears? Does any adult reading what is obviously a murder-based thriller really object to one of the characters using the word twat? Even if you're too delicate to use such terminology yourself surely you can allow it to a fictional sociopath? I guess there must be a sub-genre of nice-murder books with no bad language and mentions of dirty body parts, where all the bodies are covered up and the murderers mind their language when ranting about their justification for slaughter. If so I'd appreciate people letting me know which books fall under this heading, so I can avoid them.
