This play, a fictionalised account around the Salem Witch Trials, was as tense and chilling as I remember.  Some scenes were so gripping I remember food and hot beverages going cold at the expense of me getting through them.

In 2012, I marked this book as a 5⭐️ read, going from memory, since I studied it in school 15 years ago.

Why don't I feel like it still warrants a 5⭐️ rating?

  • I thought the experience of reading a play would be more smooth and enjoyable than it was. The format made it harder for me to distinguish between different characters at times and remember their significance, especially during the faster-paced scenes.

  • When there was more context for the characters or the wider setting, it felt a little slow and dense.

  • I didn't feel as emotionally attached to any of the characters as I thought I would be — this affected my overall response to the conclusion of the play.

  • There were a handful of times were I stumbled over the language used and had to take a little time to re-read.

Despite that, I think this play is great and I really want to see a live-staged version.
