Troy by Stephen Fry
4.0

This is a very enjoyable read, with as usual great narration from Fry on the audiobook.

There are, admittedly, much better retellings of many of the particular events of the Trojan War, both ancient and modern. Likewise there are better books for anyone interested in comparing different versions of the story, or in learning about the archaeological evidence for whether the war really happened; Fry touches on both but doesn't really explore them properly. However, as a general overview of the story, this is honestly one of the best, and most easily readable, I have read to date. Few accounts spend so much time explaining the build up to the war, or do their best to include less famous elements of the story which are not included in Homer.

It is disconcerting therefore that the book finishes with the sacking of Troy, and has only oblique references to subsequent events which are important to the story, such as Odysseus' 10 year journey home or the fates of the Trojan women. Perhaps Fry is planning to write another book?

I would particularly recommend the book as an introduction to the Trojan War for anyone who is unfamiliar with it (or only has a vague idea about a wooden horse). It is also an entertaining recap for those of us who already have some knowledge of the story - and there were a handful of elements that were new to me, mainly near the beginning of the book.

Overall a decent book and I really enjoyed listening to it.
