Miosotis Flores Never Forgets by Hilda Eunice Burgos
4.5
emotional hopeful informative sad tense medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

I loved the authenticity of Miosotis’ voice. Burgos really captured the confusing nature of being 12 years old and the characters came to life on the page. I also appreciated the way the book called out systematic racism and internalized colorism. These are important themes for young readers to encounter and they felt realistic and well done in the narrative. I also loved how the family’s heritage was woven into the story through food and language and how the different members of the Flores family handled their Dominican roots.
