I had such high hopes for this book because the premise sounded so good. I mean, it’s still a good premise but I felt like this book was just missing some things.

The first thing that I was missing was world building. I wanted to know a lot more about the Bone Crier’s and how they lived. How did they get there, what do they do for training? I felt like we just get a bit of description and then that’s it. There’s some speculation about the gates but I want to KNOW how that happened.

The plot was so slow paced and I was bored many times. How many times do we need to run around and do the same things over and over. It became really redundant at times. This book was just too long. It started out strong and then it just goes flat really fast.

I wasn’t particularly in love with any of the characters either. They are just okay. They really didn’t have much depth and I felt like that was such a wasted opportunity with all that’s going on. I did like Bastien the best but I really wanted more from him too.

The romance was okay but I wasn’t really drawn into that either. I felt like it was just one of convenience and just lacked something for me.

I really disliked the ending! It felt like a whole other person is thrown in just to make a sequel and it didn’t need that. This should have definitely been a standalone book. I did love how Sabine’s character finally grows at the end and I am interested in what happens there. I actually really liked her part at the end and it’s kind of why I bumped this up to 3 stars. Her story is definitely the most interesting one.

Overall, this book is just okay. It had so much potential and it just fell kind of flat for me. According to Goodreads, I’m in the minority. A lot of people love it but it just didn’t do it for me.
