An Unwanted Guest by Shari Lapena

This book rips off the plot of “And Then There Were None” by Agatha Christie, entirely. Usually, in mysteries there is a body within the first 50 pages, at least for Agatha Christie. This book took a while to set up the characters, and the story. If you haven’t read the original this plot will be unsuspecting. But for those who have read the book, this is a very subpar retelling. The writing itself was very bland and the novel was slow and boring. There was no build-up or suspense for each of the murders. It was like eating brunch in this snowy cozy inn and suddenly a body drops down from the ceiling. Oh, dear. The worst part of it was that there was no logical reason for any of these murders to happen. The ending was badly patched up together. Every character in this book was unlikable and this read more like a soap opera than a murder mystery. I won’t be reading any more by this author.
