dermkat 's review for:
The Guncle
by Steven Rowley
I had to sit with my feelings for this book for some days before writing my little blurb here. I'm not sure what I expected for this story but it was so full of heart and sadness and good advice and humor. When Patrick's sister in law (who was his best friend before she up and married his dumb brother) dies and his brother needs to go to rehab, he ends up taking care of their two kids: Maisie and Grant. Patrick is gay and fabulous (the kids call him "GUP", Gay Uncle Patrick) and he teaches them rules for life and tries to give them a happy summer and also figure out how to deal with the grief they're all experiencing. I cried multiple times during this book and laughed out loud. It also gave me one of my favorite new descriptions of grief: "Grief orbits the heart. Some days the circle is greater. Those are the good days. You have room to move and dance and breathe. Some days the circle is tighter. those are the hard days."
