Wakenhyrst by Michelle Paver
4.0

Uh, looks like I missed non-fiction November and haven't opened a book in weeks. Oh well, my holiday dates are now locked, and I'm motivated to read again!

Here's one that I read last Christmas time and which is pretty much made for the season. Maud is left living with his tyrannical father, Edmund, in an isolated manor house, and when Edmund finds a painting, it seems to slowly drive him mad.

Echoes of a bit of M. R. James and a bit of gothic, and creepy but in a subtle way. I enjoyed Paver's traditional ghost story Dark Matter, but Wakenhyrst is more thought-provoking and mysterious than scary. They're different, but both are page-turners and good in their own way.
