Love, Hate & Other Filters by Samira Ahmed

This is an Own Voices novel. Maya is Indian and Muslim. Her family is a tight knit family and worry for Maya. They have her dreams all laid out for her. They want her to marry a nice Indian boy and to go to a local college so she can be near by and become a lawyer. However, Maya has different dreams. She wants to go to NYU to study filmography since she loves making movies. She is confused if she date an Indian boy that her parents approve of or go for her crush, who isn’t Indian or Muslim. Her world comes to a halt when there is a terrorist attack and a Muslim is blamed, which leads to hate crimes towards her and her family.
I really enjoyed this. I loved the dreams Maya had and her trying to be proactive to achieve them. I liked the romance in this book. I did not like how controlling her family was, but at the same time I can see it being a culture thing, but still I wasn’t a fan of that. Definitely a fast read.
