We Are Okay
by Nina LaCour
'The trouble with denial is that when the truth comes, you aren't ready."
This book is about grief, growing up, and reconnecting.
I originally picked up this book because of booktube, I had seen a few people raving about it, which intrigued me enough to go pick it up.
Sure, it took me a few years to actually read it, but I got there in the end. (Please don't judge me)
Marin hasn’t spoken to anyone from her old life since the day she left everything behind. No one knows the truth about those final weeks. Not even her best friend, Mabel. But even thousands of miles away from the California coast, at college in New York, Marin still feels the pull of the life and tragedy she’s tried to outrun.
I will be honest, this book wasn't my favourite, I had some issues with the lead character, Marin, I can't explain it properly, but I just couldn't connect with her, and by the end of the book I wasn't a huge fan of her as a character.
That being said the story itself was very moving and interesting, it's just Marin I wasn't a fan of, which is a real shame.
I really enjoyed Nina LaCour's style of writing and storytelling, so much so that I will definitely be looking for more of her work in the future.
Even though I wasn't the biggest fan I would still recommend this book to others looking for an emotional, moving, and contemporary read.
